Filled with the Holy Spirit

“Each of us is as full of the Spirit as we really want to be” -Oswald Sanders, Spiritual Leadership (p. 82).

Half full, half empty, or overflowing?

Do we, indeed, have not because we ask not? In describing how the Lord will grant to us the measure of His Spirit that we seek in Luke 11:13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

For the asking, but as a child from its Father. For the asking, but His infusion requires turning over control to Him–we cannot be both full of ourselves and full of Him. If we desire His precious presence, He will fill us. His indwelling bears the observable fruit of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
The Holy “Spirit’s help in prayer is mentioned in the Bible more frequently than any other help He gives us” (p. 88). His presence inevitably spills forth in prayer, sometimes expressable in words and sometimes in only uttering the unavoidable gasps and cries of a pregnant woman laboring to bring forth her child.

“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John 7:36-39
