He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day. —Psalm 91 4-5
You know those scenes where a thousand archers pull back on their bow strings, aim their arrow into the sky, and let loose a torrent of arrows onto the opposing army? That is what we face today. They will not prevail.
Their arrows fly in our politics, our children’s schools, social media, movies full of disguised lies against truth, even full blown porn. Truth is under attack, and our society is increasingly calling evil good, and good, evil. Cling to the truth which is indeed our shield and buckler against the onslaught.
Safely shielded in truth, we can love–against the cultural norms of attacking our enemies, and even against the reactions of our hearts at some of the wickedness and harms of sin. We need each other to find encouragement to react with love. Loving our enemies is our “return fire,” sent clothed in humility and genuine care for the poor souls who oppose not only us, not only God, but even their own selves.
With gentle pity, wage love. Attack in love with full force. Like a loving parent with a toddler having a tantrum, lift our enemies in our arms, hug them closely, help them see the futility of their resistance to true love.
Shielded in truth. Attacking aggressively with love. I love this imagery. Powerful stuff!
Thanks Randy. Glad to be in the trenches with you.
